AIPN Statement on President Trump’s EO Promoting Advanced AI Innovation and Security
Today, the AI Policy Network responded to President Trump’s executive order, “Promoting Advanced Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Security,” welcoming its focus on AI and national security while urging Congress to enact comprehensive, durable security measures that extend beyond cyber.
“Benchmarking the most capable AI models, hardening federal systems against AI-enabled cyberattacks, and partnering to evaluate frontier models before they ship are serious steps that keep America ahead,” said Mark Beall, President of the AI Policy Network. “I applaud the Trump administration for recognizing that the most advanced AI systems are now a matter of national security.”
He continued, “AI is more than just a cyber issue. AI companies have created superhuman cyberweapons, but the same capability jumps will soon extend to other domains, like novel pathogen development and missile design. AI companies have been clear that they are building ‘artificial superintelligence,’ systems much smarter than all the world’s experts combined, which would create unprecedented national security challenges. Congress should build on this EO and create a permanent framework, with the ability to not only evaluate but also direct action in response. The government needs deeper situational awareness into AI systems before they move towards commercial deployment and more funding to get the job done. With the right framework and funding in place, America can lead the world in both advancing AI and using it responsibly.”
